Herbert Power winner Big Memory has copped a 2kgs penalty for the Melbourne Cup following his tough Caulfield victory.

Big Memory defeated Signoff and Let's Make Adeal to win the Group Two Herbert Power on Saturday at Caulfield, earning direct entry to the Caulfield Cup.

Under the rules the handicapper cannot hand down a Caulfield Cup weight penalty for Big Memory, leaving the Tony McEvoy-trained French import at a lightweight 50kg for Saturday's race over 2,400m.

However Racing Victoria executive general manager Greg Carpenter announced on Monday that Big Memory had been given a 2kg impost for next month's Melbourne Cup at Flemington.

"Big Memory was very strong in winning the Herbert Power and recording his second black type win of the year at 2,400 metres or further. It was a performance that was full of merit," Carpenter told the Racing Victoria website.

"Whilst he could not be re-handicapped in the Caulfield Cup, he has been handed a 2kg penalty in the Melbourne Cup which lifts him to 37th in the order of entry with 52.5kg.

"With the penalty he now has 5.5kg less than topweight Admire Rakti in the Melbourne Cup, compared to 6kg less than Admire Rakti in the Caulfield Cup for which he could not be penalised."

The draw for the Caulfield Cup will be made on Tuesday evening.
