IF the handicaps for tomorrow's Melbourne Cup were released today, favourite So You Think would be carrying about 3kg more in the $6m race, reports Brendan Cormick in The Australian.

His report states: Racing Victoria's chief handicapper, Greg Carpenter, told The Australian yesterday that he would need to look at the equation in detail, but the benchmark would be Kingston Town's 59.5kg handicap approaching his second Cox Plate success, which made him original top weight that year.

Kingston Town had been more versatile at the same age, having run second in the Victoria Derby before he won the AJC Derby and the Sydney Cup at three. He won the Cox Plate at four and would win at five and six.

"I'd be guided by a horse like Kingston Town and compare what that horse had achieved to that point and what this horse had achieved," Carpenter said. "It would be tempered by the fact he hasn't raced beyond 2040m. There is no doubt he would get a significant increase, but exactly what that would be would require a little bit of work. His weight as a four-year-old would be a starting point.

So You Think will carry 56kg in the $6m event, a weight Carpenter allotted on September 1 after the son of High Chaparral's first-up victory in the Memsie Stakes on August 28 at Caulfield.
