Geelong Cup winner Almoonqith has been penalised 1kg for the Emirates Melbourne Cup, taking the Lindsay Park-trained entire to 28th in the order of entry.

That order had to be adjusted on Thursday morning following the withdrawal of last year’s winnerProtectionist and The Bart Cummings victor Let's Make Adeal, virtually pushing the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained six-year-old to 27th.

Originally allocated 52kg, Almoonqith will now carry 53kg if he gains a start on the first Tuesday in November.

Almoonqith held off Dandino to win the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) on Wednesday, in just his fifth Australian start having previously been trained by South African Mike de Kock in Dubai.

“Almoonqith made a winning move coming to the home turn in the Geelong Cup and was a dominant winner over Dandino with a decisive margin back to Manndawi in third place,” said Racing Victoria Executive General Manager - Racing, Greg Carpenter.

“In the Geelong Cup, Almoonqith had 2kg less than Dandino who has 52.5kg in the Melbourne Cup and the 1kg penalty now takes Almoonqith to 53kg, representing a 2.5kg turnaround between Almoonqith and Dandino from yesterday’s race.”
