The story of the day at Warrnambool was apprentice jockey Harry Coffey who notched up his first treble of wins at a TAB meeting.

The popular young rider, who has Cystic Fibrosis, achieved the feat in the final race of the day, aboard Fashion Wah Wah.

The five-year-old mare is trained locally by Brenton and Mark Primmer and was the clear favourite as she hit the track.

Coffey drew clear in the final straight, coming home in front of Ruber Rex by just over a length, with Norton Belle placing third.

Fashion Wah Wah had come in at fifth and first in her previous two starts, both at her home-town track.

Coffey went into the race confident about the mare's abilities, mentioning after his second win the last race was his focus.

"It's a very special thing this win and to top it off with a treble is even better," he said.

"I've been confident all day and the other two wins were just bonuses."

Coffey, who drew a large round of applause after his hat-trick, achieved a first in race five aboard Olly I Am for trainer Laurie Farrugia, before setting out with Lord Wimble to win by about one and a half lengths for trainers Bill and Symon Wilde in race seven.

The apprentice jockey has notched up an impressive 28 wins since riding out for the first time at Manangatang in October 2011.

Coffey rode three winners at a non-TAB meet at Balranald, NSW, in February this year.

At midnight Coffey will begin a suspension for a careless riding charge from Mildura yesterday. He will resume riding from September 18. (www.racingvictoria.net.au)
