Astute Whittlesea horseman Peter Morgan is dreaming of races like the BMW Caulfield Cup with his emerging three-year-old talent Star Rolling.

The untapped Casino Prince gelding brought up his third win from just four starts when he overcame a wide draw to claim the $100,000 Brian Beattie Handicap (2000m) at Flemington today.

Morgan, who trains in partnership with Craig Widdison, said Star Rolling would now be freshened before being targeting the riches on offer in Melbourne over the Spring Racing Carnival.

“We’ll give him a little break now and target something in the spring with him,” Morgan said.

“He’ll be nominated for all the races and something like the Naturalism he’ll be targeted for.”

With the Naturalism Stakes (2000m) winner afforded a ballot exemption in the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup, Morgan is allowing himself to dream of the world’s richest 2400-metre turf handicap.

“You’ve got to dream about those things. I’m not sure whether he’s good enough to get there or not, but you can only win and every time he wins he keeps improving,” Morgan said.

Morgan said the horse, which was presented a treat in the yard today, had a lot of upside and would only continue to improve with a break and more racing.

“He’s better than winter racing, he keeps improving and the trips are not going to be an issue. He’s a horse with a lot of upside,” he said.

Sent out a $2.40 favourite, Star Rolling had his rivals covered a long way out and once given full steam by jockey Reece Wheeler he cleared out to score by 2.5 lengths from Spring Cheer ($11) with Underestimation ($12) a close third.

Wheeler was also full of praise for Star Rolling and predicts a bright future for the gelding.

“The more pressure put on him the more he found. He was going pretty easy a long way out,” Wheeler said.

“The improvement in him is pretty vast in a short period of time.

“He’s still got to take a step up....but if he takes another step and grows up into the sort of animal the stable think he is then he’s a pretty promising young horse.”
