Classy jumper Wells has won the Mosstrooper Steeple for the third time for trainer Kathryn Durden and jockey Richard Cully.

Champion jumper Wells has won his third consecutive Mosstrooper Steeplechase at Pakenham.

Having his first start since June and his first over jumps this year, the Kathryn Durden-trained 11-year-old was ridden by Richard Cully in Sunday's 3500m-race.

Wells ($3.40) settled back in the field in the slowly run event with Cully moving him into striking position at the second last obstacle.

He then took the lead and held off the challenge from Lucky Tonight by 1-3/4 lengths with $3.30 favourite Lucques another eight lengths third.

"He is a supreme stayer and he's a super horse," Durden told broadcaster racing.com.

"We'll just go along the path that we've gone along for the last few years.

"I think he's going as good (as previous years). The flat runs might have been a bit concerning for others rather than us, but his trials were really good and he's been doing everything that he's always done for years so we've been super happy with him."
