Craig Williams will ride leading contender Triple Crown in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast.

Trainer Gary Portelli snapped up Williams to partner the filly who put her credentials on the line when she beat Ambers Waltz at Randwick on Saturday.

Although Portelli admitted the reigning Magic Millions favourite was unlucky after getting back then racing wide, he was proud of the way the diminutive Triple Crown stuck to her task.

"She has come through the race just fine, she is very tough," Portelli said.

"The other horse was unlucky but my filly is a little fighter and she just kept going.

"She is a ready made racehorse but she is only tiny and that's one reason I wanted Craig Williams.

"He is a small jockey and I didn't want a tall rider on such a little filly.

"She would be lucky to be 15.1 hands.

"Craig is also very professional, he does the form, he knows what is going on so I'm very pleased to have him aboard."

A four-time Melbourne premiership winner, Williams split with trainer David Hayes in October and has been riding freelance since they parted ways.

The John O'Shea-trained Ambers Waltz retained Magic Millions favouritism with TAB Sportsbet despite her defeat and was at $3.80 on Monday while Triple Crown was an $11 chance.

The $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m) for two-year-olds on January 9 is the richest feature on the program.

While the markets are clearcut for the Classic, there are four $6 equal favourites for the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy for three-year-olds - Graceful Anna, Deer Valley, Love Conquers All and Shoot Out.
