Four of leviathan owner Lloyd Williams' leading spring carnival contenders including 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient have made their first public appearances for the season.

Efficient and 2008 Melbourne Cup third placegetter C'est La Guerre galloped together between races at Bendigo on Sunday while stablemates Renewable and Zipping partnered each other in another workout.

Steven Arnold rode Efficient who went to the line a head behind his stablemate ridden by Eddie Cassar.

Arnold was also aboard Renewable with Cassar on Zipping with that pair given a searching gallop.

Since being ruled out of last year's Melbourne Cup with a fetlock injury, Efficient has had just one start when unplaced in a sprint at Flemington in May.

Zipping, second in the Cox Plate and ninth in the Melbourne Cup, won the Sandown Classic in mid November and also had just one start in the autumn while C'est La Guerre had two.

The less credentialled Renewable built up a solid record early in the year with two 2500m victories from five starts.

Williams has stated his intention to set Efficient for the 2010 Ascot Gold Cup in England after this year's Australian spring.

Entries for the 2009 Melbourne Cup will be finalised on Tuesday.

Dual Derby winner Rebel Raider and Irish mare Profound Beauty, who ran fifth last year, share early favouritism at $17 ahead of nominations with Efficient and C'est La Guerre next at $21 on Betstar's market.

Sportingbet Australia has Rebel Raider outright favourite at $17 ahead of Efficient and Profound Beauty ($19), C'est La Guerre at $21 and last year's winner Viewed at $23.

TAB Sportsbet and other agencies will release their markets later this week.
