Everything has gone well with Bernicia's preparation leading into Saturday's Coolmore Classic at Rosehill except for the barrier draw, and trainer Guy Walter is looking to the past to find a positive spin on her wide gate.
The Walter-trained Danni Martine won the Group One Coolmore (1500m) four years ago from the outside barrier, 16, with Bernicia also coming up with the widest draw.
Her prospects have also improved with the scratching of Hot Danish who will be saved for the Queen Of The Turf Stakes after the decision not to run her with 59 kilograms on her back.
"Maybe lightning can strike twice," Walter said.
"But it will be very hard. Being out there is never a good draw and she will need pace in the race to help her.
"I thought she was a little flat in the Wiggle but she has done everything right since.
"But Danni Martine won from out there and caused a bit of an upset so hopefully it can happen again."
At her first start since she won a Listed race at Sandown on November 8, Bernicia finished fourth in the Group Two Breeders' Classic (1200m) on an unsuitable slow Randwick track on February 14 and sixth in the Wiggle Quality (1400m) at the same course three weeks later.
Both races were won by Hot Danish who carried 61 kilograms at her most recent outing.
The winner of the Coolmore Classic is liable for a penalty in the Doncaster Mile on April 18 but the Queen Of The Turf winner is exempt because that race is at weight-for-age.
Hot Danish has 53.5 kilograms in the Doncaster while new Coolmore favourite Typhoon Tracy has just 49.5kg and would more than likely need a penalty to gain a start.
Bernicia, who has 51kg in the Doncaster, was on Friday a $21 chance on the revised TAB Sportsbet market for the Coolmore while Danni Martine started at $18 the year she won.
With 10 of the horses in the 16-horse field on the 51kg limit as well as the three emergencies, Rod Quinn who rides Bernicia and Jeff Penza, who is booked for Imananabaa and reserve Mary's Grace, have been given permission to ride a kilo overweight.
Peter Wells is engaged for Illuminates and emergency Glowlamp and if either Mary's Grace or Glowlamp starts Penza and Wells will ride those horses and new jockeys will have to be found for Imananabaa and Illuminates.
