The Mick Price-trained Tribunal has significant gear changes as he makes a push to regain Victoria Derby favouritism against arch rival Shamoline Warrior in the Group Three Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield.
Shamoline Warrior soared to the head of TAB Sportsbet's Derby chart at $5.50 after winning the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington on October 3 but Tribunal, who was third in that race, beat him two weeks earlier when they ran the quinella in the New Litho Plate (1700m) at Caulfield.
Tribunal has eased to third favourite in the Derby at $8 behind Spring Champion Stakes winner Monaco Consul ($7) but Price hopes that blinkers and a tongue tie on the Encosta De Lago colt will give him an edge in Saturday's 2000m event.
"He has worked pretty well in blinkers and a tongue tie so we will give them a try and see how he goes," Price said.
Tribunal has only been beaten twice in his five starts and strung together three wins a row at Sale, Sandown and Caulfield before his last-start defeat.
"I was happy with the ride last start at Flemington but I wasn't happy with the horse's attitude," Price said.
He said a tongue tie seemed to have helped with Tribunal's breathing and that he pulled up blowing less than usual after a solid gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday.
"He is a big, bulky colt and takes a fair bit of work," Price said.
Craig Newitt will ride Tribunal for the first time since winning on him at Sale in August and from gate two will have every chance to take up a forward position after a plan to ride the horse off the pace last start failed.
Spring Champion Stakes runner-up Gathering is the likely pacemaker while Michael Rodd on Shamoline Warrior will aim for a midfield spot in the nine-horse field.
Price also has Iquit in the Norman Robinson but despite being ridden by Damien Oliver he has a big task ahead of him after his last-start third in restricted company at Pakenham.
Last year Price and Newitt combined to win the Norman Robinson with Pre Eminence who trained on to finish third to Rebel Raider and Whobegotyou in the Victoria Derby.
Only five horses have won the Norman Robinson-Derby double and none since Amalfi in 2001.
