Perth stayer Scenic Shot may need to produce a modern day weight-carrying record if he's to win next week's Brisbane Cup following his commanding victory in the Group Two O'Shea Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Scenic Shot, ridden by Shane Scriven, proved too good for his rivals to score by 2-3/4 lengths over Kiwi stayer Mirkola Lass in Saturday's 2200-metre feature,

Hollindale Stakes winner Fulmonti was a further three-quarters of a length away third.

Queensland Racing Limited handicapper Lester Grimmett will hold the key to whether Scenic Shot starts in the Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm next week when weights are released on Monday.

Stand-in trainer Len Morton, representing his son Daniel who is in England with stablemate Scenic Blast for next month's feature sprints at Ascot, said Scenic Shot would likely run in the Brisbane Cup provided he received a suitable weight.

Last year Scenic Shot narrowly beat Rampant Lion in the O'Shea Stakes and then carried 59 kilograms when the gelding finished fourth to the Bart Cummings-trained Viewed.

"I'd expect we'd get around 59 kilos again but there's no use me telling the handicapper," Morton said.

Realistically, Scenic Shot will receive considerably more this year after winning the Group One Doomben Cup (2020m) earlier this month.

Tulloch holds the weight carrying record of 9st 12lb (62.5kg) when he won the 1961 Brisbane Cup when it was run over 3200 metres.

The only stayer since to have carried anywhere near that weight was the Tommy Smith-trained Igloo who won with 57 kilos in 1974.

Scriven adopted an English riding style on Scenic Shot after he tracked Rampant Lion in the middle stages.

"I've never ridden English style before but that's how to ride him," Scriven said.

"You just have to free rein him and just steer."

Len Morton said he was a little worried with Scenic Shot's wide barrier draw when acceptances were released on Thursday but he was relieved when showers fell on Friday night.

"He's done a treat since his Doomben Cup win and it was just a matter of him holding his form," he said.

"Weight-for-age and the track conditions really suited him but I was feeling better when I saw the ground chopping out earlier in the day."

Trainers Kenny Rae and Chris Jordan both plan to back-up their placegetters, Mirkola lass and Fulmonti, in the Brisbane Cup.

"I was a bit disappointed with Michael Walker's ride on her (Mirkola Lass) in the Doomben Cup last run," Rae said.

"Michael was too negative so I told his rider today (Craig Grylls) to be more aggressive.

"I'll wait for the weights first but I'd say she'll be running in the Brisbane Cup."
