Lee Freedman will have two runners in the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday week following the win of Masthead in the Inglis Premier at Mornington.

Masthead will join stablemate Atomic in the 1200m two-year-old feature after connections on Wednesday indicated they would pay a $55,000 late entry fee, due on Monday, for Atomic to get into the race.

Written Tycoon colt Masthead ($4.20) earned his Blue Diamond berth with a long neck win over Emerald Downs ($11) with another Blue Diamond contender Delago's Lad ($3.60 fav) three-quarters of a length away third.

The first prize of $145,000 only from the Inglis Premier counts towards the Blue Diamond and ensured Masthead of a start.

The two-year-old was well ridden by Craig Williams in the 1200m feature but he cannot ride him in the Diamond as he has been booked for the Peter Moody-trained Hallowell Belle.

"He's been well placed and well handled for this. He'd had two runs in the spring and Lee set him for this race," Williams said.

"I went down and rode him in a trial at Balnarring and he went really well against some smart horses.

"But the Blue Diamond is a different race."

John O'Neill, also in the ownership of Masthead, is the managing part-owner of Atomic, an impressive winner of the Chairman's Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on February 9 and is excited about the Commands colt.

"He's certainly in the race (Blue Diamond). The favourite (Sepoy) is a superstar so we'd be pretty happy to run second or third to him," he said.

"I think at this stage depending how he gallops (on Thursday), Lee will have a look at him (on) Friday or Saturday and we might pay up."

Masthead was the middle pin of a winning treble for Williams who won earlier on the Mick Kent-trained Domesky in the Maiden Plate (1600m) and later aboard Zedi Knight in the Listed $100,000 Hareeba Stakes (1200m) for Caulfield trainer Brendan McCarthy.

Sepoy remains in the red at $1.85 for the Blue Diamond with TAB Sportsbet ahead of Hallowell Belle at $9 and Atomic at $11.

Masthead is at $21.
