Impressive debut winner Killian has inherited the precociousness of his dam Preserve but whether he can learn quickly enough to be a Blue Diamond contender is still not known.

The two-year-old son of Commands last month won on raw talent at his only start at Sandown but will have to show he learned from the experience when he steps out for Saturday's colts and geldings Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield.

Killian is on the Blue Diamond short list for trainer Peter Snowden and stable rider Kerrin McEvoy will test him out when he takes over the reins from Michael Rodd.

Rodd told connections that Killian knew "absolutely nothing" when he won at Sandown but predicted an exciting future for the youngster.

"He will be coming up against a bit better horses this week but I'm sure he will be in the mix," Melbourne foreman Paul Snowden said.

"We are just keeping our fingers crossed for a good draw."

Killian is among five last-start winners nominated for the Prelude.

Blue Diamond Preview winner Ready For Effort is among the top contenders along with Starspangledbanner who won his only start at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day.

Sydney colt Real Saga is unbeaten in two starts while the David Hayes-trained Bawaardi scored first-up at Ballarat last start.

Killian is bred to run early being the second winner of four foals to race from Canny Lad mare Preserve.

Preserve raced 14 times and all of her four wins were as a two-year-old in stakes races including the VRC Sires' Produce Stakes when it was a Group One race in 2000.

She also won the Group Two Magic Night, the Listed Debutante Stakes and the Listed Gosford Slipper.
