Classy mare Cats Whisker rounded out a successful day for Mark Kavanagh when she scored a thrilling win in the Group Three Cockram Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.

The win was the second of the day for Kavanagh following Raffaello's earlier success.

The Flemington trainer was also delighted with Whobegotyou's second placing in the Liston Stakes and Shamoline Warrior's fourth in the Vain Stakes.

"That's rounded out a very good day," a beaming Kavanagh said from the winner's stall.

"If you had of said that's how they would all run to me this morning, I would have taken that."

Cats Whisker, first-up since a win at her home track on May 16, was used up early by Steven King to get across from an outside barrier and take the lead.

The Fusaichi Pegasus mare then showed great fight over the concluding stages to hold out a determined challenge on the inside from Annesong.

The win was the third of the day for King who earlier teamed up with Kavanagh to win with Raffaello.

His other win was aboard Predatory Pricer in the day's feature, the JJ Liston Stakes, for Paul Murray.

Cats Whisker, bred by senior part-owner Joy Jenkins, had outstanding form last spring including a second to Gallica in the Group One Thousand Guineas.

She was given a brief autumn campaign, which included her last-start win at Flemington, following an operation to remove bone chips.

"We were confident earlier in the week, but after she drew (barrier) 14 we were a bit worried," Kavanagh said.

He said there was plenty of improvement on the cards for Cats Whisker.

"I've left her a little bit soft. I think she can win a good race this time in," Kavanagh said.

There is a chance she will be out to emulate her former star stablemate Divine Madonna by heading to one of the feature Group Ones over the Flemington Carnival.

"She's nominated for all the big ones. She could stick a bit. But we might keep her to mares grade and she might go through to the Myer (Classic)," Kavanagh said.

Cats Whisker ($6.50 eq fav) had just a nose margin over runner-up Annesong ($6.50 eq fav) while Flying Ruby ($13) made strong ground for third another 1-3/4 lengths back.

Kavanagh said Whobegotyou's first-up effort earlier in the day, when second to Predatory Pricer in the Liston Stakes, had delighted connections.

"He's pretty soft," Kavanagh noted.

"It was an excellent effort.

"His sectionals were the best in the race and he's got a lot of improvement in him and I'm very happy with him."
