The Stradbroke Handicap could be back on the agenda for star sprinter Hay List despite his shock withdrawal from Saturday's Doomben 10,000.

McNair was relieved to learn Hay List's infection in his off hind leg was not regarded as career threatening.

"It's bad luck he's had to miss the 10,000 but it's good news it's not career threatening," McNair said.

"It hasn't been diagnosed yet but it appears it may only be a foot abscess.

"We're waiting on a few blood tests and a few other things."

McNair first noticed Hay List, who has had x-rays to determine if there's any serious problem, was not himself after the horse returned from light work and a swim at Eagle Farm on Friday morning.

"Within an hour I was on the phone to the vet," McNair said.

"Obviously it had been brewing for a while but the vet put a poultice on his foot and bandaged the whole leg.

"Within an hour his temperature went up one degree from being normal at nine o'clock.

"But it now appears it's not as bad as I first feared and it may only be a foot abscess and we're not ruling out the Stradbroke just yet."

The Group One Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) is run at Eagle Farm on June 11.

Hay List is back in Stradbroke Handicap markets and is now second favourite at $5 with TAB Sportsbet behind Sincero ($4.80) who needs to win the Group Two QTC Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm next week to cement a start.

Hay List was runner-up to the world's best sprinter Black Caviar in the Group One BTC Cup at Doomben at his last appearance and was set to become the shortest-priced favourite of modern times in the Doomben 10,000.
