Lee Freedman will nominate Marchelle Belle for the Caulfield Cup but admits it is a pipedream to think the mare will run in the feature.

The Tasmanian Oaks winner returned to the track for a first-up win in The Yalumba Masters at Caulfield on Saturday.

However, Freedman said it was "August dreaming" to think she could be good enough to win a race such as the Group One 2400m feature.

"She's going to be entered (for the Caulfield Cup), but I'll be looking more at those good mares' races over the spring for her," Freedman said.

Freedman said he "half expected" her to perform well first-up over 1100 metres.

"Although I thought she would need luck from barrier one," he said.

Beautifully ridden by Dwayne Dunn, the Anabaa four-year-old ($12) was eighth of the 10 runners on the home turn but got into the clear at the top of the straight and went home to score by a head from Annesong.

The $2.50 favourite With Apologies was a half-length away third after having little luck in running.

"She has a got a very good bit of acceleration and if she can carry that on to a mile or a mile-and-a-quarter she's going to be competitive in the mares," Freedman said.

Marchelle Belle strung together five wins in a row last summer including the Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) at Launceston and has now won six of her nine starts.

"She won the Tassie Oaks at the end of a long preparation and Dwayne and I agreed she wasn't at her best that day and still won the race and we went to the well once more but that didn't work so we spelled her," Freedman said.

"She's a pretty useful mare."

Entries close for the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate, Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Guineas and Thousand Guineas on Tuesday.
