Heart Of Dreams kept alive the Cox Plate dreams of his connections when he upset favourite Whobegotyou in the Underwood Stakes on his home track of Caulfield to give trainer Mick Price his second win in the race.

Price said earlier this week that Heart Of Dreams had to win the Group One 1800m weight-for-age feature to keep heading towards the Cox Plate and the four-year-old did not let him down.

"This was the day, if he hadn't been able to carry weight-for-age properly, have a nice run in the race and win, it was three weeks to the Toorak," Price said.

"It probably means we'll have to go to the Yalumba now and on to the Cox Plate.

"He had a nice run in the race. I thought he might have been a bit on the fresh side but he settled really well.

"I suppose we'll go to the Yalumba and test him over 2000 metres.

"So much for the Toorak."

Ridden by Craig Newitt, Heart Of Dreams ($10) enjoyed a midfield trail before he hit the lead and held out the fast-finishing Whobegotyou ($2.40 fav) by a long neck.

Predatory Pricer ($11), who settled second behind race leader Typhoon Tracy, boxed on well to be only a short-head away third.

It was a good day for owner-breeder Larry Bartle who not only landed the Underwood, but earlier claimed the Listed South Yarra Stakes (1200m) with Heart Of Dream's brother Rightfully Yours.

Both are by Show A Heart out of the Royal Academy mare Academy Of Dreams.

Newitt, whose partner Karli gave birth to their son Noah three weeks ago, completed a double on the brothers while Price had a treble after also winning with his Victoria Derby prospect Tribunal.

Price, who won his first Underwood with $41 chance Rubiscent in 2007, had some advice for Newitt before the race.

"I said to Craig 'if Rubiscent can do it, you can do it'," Price said.

Newitt said Heart Of Dreams, the 2009 Australian Guineas (1600m) winner, had turned in a better performance than it might have appeared last start when fifth to Vigor in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

"He got smashed pretty much the whole race. Today I just wanted to let him find his feet a couple of lengths further back and he got a beautiful drag into the race from Maldivian," Newitt said.

"He was clearly headed by Whobegotyou but he just doesn't lie down this horse. I can't see why he can't run the Cox Plate trip, he really toughed it out today."

Trainer Mark Kavanagh was delighted with the runs of Whobegotyou and Maldivian (fourth) and said Cox Plate favourite Whobegotyou would have his next run in the Yalumba Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield in three weeks.

Kavanagh said reigning Cox Plate hero Maldivian might go to the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington in two weeks, the Caulfield Cup (2400m) two weeks after that and then the Cox Plate for a defence of his crown.

"I haven't had a winner today but I'm not going home sulking," Kavanagh said.
