Majestic Music has given trainer Leon Macdonald some consolation on Melbourne Cup day with her win at Flemington.

The Macdonald-trained Rebel Raider was the early favourite for the Cup before he suffered a tendon injury which required surgery.

After jumping from a wide alley in the Listed Lexus Plate (1400m), Majestic Music ($11) got back early and swooped down the outside to beat Europa Point ($15) by a short head.

"It's always nice to win on Melbourne Cup day," Macdonald said.

"She is a very good horse. I was concerned about the barrier but I was confident from the top of the straight that she had them covered."

Majestic Music finished 2-1/2 lengths seventh in the Thousand Guineas won by Irish Lights after winning the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes.

Steven Arnold replaced suspended stable jockey Clare Lindop who was watching from the sidelines.

"She had the class," Arnold said.

"The headwind in the straight made it into a staying test and that was always going to suit her."

Macdonald said Majestic Music was likely to take on the males in the Sandown Guineas on Saturday week.

Lindop will be back to ride stablemate Miss With Attitude in Thursday's VRC Oaks.
