Pat Carey will wait until later in the week before deciding if former United States sprinter Cannonball runs in the Doveton Stakes.
Cannonball had his most recent preparation in the care of Gai Waterhouse at Randwick but has since transferred to Carey's team at Mornington.
The gelding has struggled to find his top form since coming to Australia at the beginning of last year, with his best result a second in the Group Three Tramway Handicap (1400m) on a heavy track.
The son of Catienus hasn't raced since beating just one runner home in the Group One Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 2.
"I'll wait and see, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with him yet," Carey said.
"I'm just feeling my way with him at the moment.
"We'll make our decision on Thursday, I put a nomination in to see how the race shaped up."
A winner of four of his 26 starts, Cannonball's most recent victory came in a Listed race at Saratoga in the United States in September 2009.
Cannonball was one of 15 nominations for the Listed Doveton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
The Lee Freedman-trained First Command is among the entries as is the Gerald Ryan-trained Ego's Dare.
Ego's Dare will be trying to follow in the hoofsteps of stablemate Ahdashim who won the Standish Handicap at Flemington last Saturday.
Leading trainer Tony Vasil has nominated three horses - Apprehend, De Fine Lago and Maxisun.
First Command will carry a 105 rating into the race - one point ahead of the veteran sprinter Royal Ida.
A rising 11-year-old, Royal Ida has been kept in work since finishing third to Avenue at weight-for-age in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes at Sandown in November.
More than 170 nominations have been received for the Caulfield meeting.
