New Zealand stayer Deane Martin has moved a step closer to securing a start in the $6 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) after being issued with a one kilogram penalty for his win in Saturday’s Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) at Rosehill.

The Bruce Wallace-trained galloper passed the first ballot clause for the Melbourne Cup with his win in Saturday’s $125,000 feature with Racing Victoria’s Executive General Manager – Racing, Greg Carpenter, assessing the victory worthy of a penalty.

The updated Orders of Entry for the 2014 Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup and Emirates Melbourne Cup are available here.

The five-year-old rises to 51kg in the Melbourne Cup and climbs to 63rd position in the Order of Entry for the 4 November feature.

“The penalty for the Melbourne Cup takes Deane Martin to 7kg below the top weight Admire Rakti (58kg) but we decided not to issue a penalty for the Caulfield Cup where he has 6kg less than Admire Rakti,” Carpenter said.

Deane Martin occupies 63rd position on the Order of Entry for the Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup (2400m) and will look to secure a penalty with a win in the Group 1 Metropolitan (2400m) next start.

Another Kiwi, the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained Sangster, passed the first ballot clause for the Caulfield Cup with his runner-up placing behind The Cleaner in Friday night’s Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) and moved to 35th in the Order of Entry, where he has 52kg.

Saturday’s Listed Harry White Classic (2400m) winner Like A Carousel satisfied the first ballot clause for the Melbourne Cup with his Sportingbet Park success and moved to 68th in the Order of Entry, where he has 50kg.

The third acceptances for the Caulfield Cup will be taken at 12 noon (AET) on Tuesday, 7 October.
