Gai Waterhouse's impressive import Fiorente will miss the Sydney spring carnival and is expected to start his spring campaign in the Group I Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 31. Last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up returned in the autumn to finish 3rd to All Too Hard in the All Aged Stakes.
He won a recent Randwick trial in smart style and worked nicely between races at headquarters last Saturday. Waterhouse said Fiorente would have another trial onFriday at Randwick over 1400 metres before going to Melbourne for his Melbourne Cup campaign. Fiorente is currently the second favourite at $10 for Australia’s top race. He is at 11 in the Cox Plate.
