Sometime you wonder why something so obvious takes so long to implement but Racing Victoria has decided to finally move into the 21st century by bringing forward acceptances deadlines to Wednesday instead of Thursday for all Saturday metropolitan meetings from February, 2011.. Zing. boom, hurrah for what RVL found , through a study naturally, was what all keen punters could have told them for nothing. The revelation RVL came upon was that there would be greater fixed odds betting, more awareness and more publicity in the media if fields were available earlier.

According to Adrian Dunn (Melb Herald Sun 7/10/2010) "acceptances for all Group 1 races in Sydney are taken on Wednesday and Western Australia recently shifted their Saturday meetings from Thursday to Wednesday... early acceptances are now a staple of the spring carnival". The apparent stumbling block has been the trainers however a half price early scratching fee for trainers unsure of their intentions by 5pm on the day before the Saturday race will apply and surely that should put to rest any major concerns. One wonders why RVL could not have hung that carrot out a lot earlier but it is there now.

RVL will review the decision, for six months, after "analyzing fixed odds betting, owner costs, field size impact, feedback and media exposure". Let me tell you now RVL, and this is for free, your move and the dangling carrot is an industry winner. It will allow hard copy specialist publications such as "The Winning Post", "Best Bets" and "The Sportsman" more time to eventually add features time does not permit now not to mention earlier publication time thus providing information and time for the keen punters. Usually the keen punters are bigger bettors than M/s Average and discussions about betting moves a day earlier MUST add interest to the programme.. Online publications, such as "Racenet", will have all the form available by mid afternoon/early evening on Wednesday and for desperadoes like me all I can say is thank you.
