Sometime back I mentioned a term I call "Generic Ratings" which is all about assigning a figure to each horse relative to its ability. The general premise is that you subtract the weight to be carried from the rating figure and the horse with the highest figure becomes your selection. For example, Horses A B and C are rated 70 66 and 65 respectively and all are weighted on 53kg. Simple arithmetic shows Horse A tops the bill at 17.For years and years I have promised myself I would start

Simple arithmetic shows Horse A tops the bill at 17.

For years and years I have promised myself I would start a set of generic ratings and finally I am actually going to do it. My starting point will be the July 18 meetings at Caulfield (Monash Stakes) and Rosehill (Winter Stakes) and it is my intention to compile a list of the good runs from those meetings until the end of November sometime. My list will be subjective but I doubt if too many people would disagree with 95% of my initial contenders for the final listing. The list will grow and grow over the next four months to an almost unmanageable beast but if I take my time about it I am sure it will be controlled and the final product will become an interesting addition to my punting.

Here's my list so far in no particular order. I am not going to make an exact distance/class order just yet until the fitness levels of several runners are as close to proven as I can judge. Remember, the idea is to have a properly sorted out list at the end of the year.

Strat's Flyer, Gran Sasso, I Am Invincible, Starspangledbanner, Tariks, Marchelle Belle, Annesong, Let Go Thommo, Orange County, Mic Mac, All American, El Segundo, Driffield Gold, Corsaire, Headway, Raffaello, Maxisun, Predatory Pricer, Whobegotyou, Typhoon Tracy, Heart Of Dreams, Cats Whisker and Miss Maren.

Here's a little task for you if you are interested. Open up an Excel file and slot them into a rough position of best to worst horse as we know them now. Note I use the term "best". This means we have to slot them as if each horse was carrying the same weight over its best distance. On that basis I would have El Segundo as my best horse. None of you would disagree with that however if we took distance into account you would have to have Mic Mac ahead of him based solely on the Aurie Star Handicap or would you considering Mic Mac carried 55.5kg and El Segundo carried 63.5kg and there was just over 1 length between them??

Eventually I will bring distance into the equation as we get closer to the middle distance and staying races but for the time being I will just start with a broad list as mentioned above. See how you go. It is not a massively time consuming exercise if you start now.
