The upper echelon of Australian horse racing are WFA races with undoubtedly the WS Cox Plate THE greatest of them all. These are the races where the best horses generally compete and they are also assumed to be "easier" (is there such a word in the racing game) selection wise. In the long term this is true however just picking more winners is not necessarily the solution to the successful punting.

So far this racing season, if we count July 18 as part of the season, there have been four contested WFA races and along the way punters have been subjected to a savage beating not only selection wise but punting wise as well. The races in question are the Monash Stakes (Caulfield) , Bletchingly Stakes (Caulfield) , Missile Stakes (Rosehill) and the Spring Stakes (Morphettville).

The results show 1 favourite has won at $2.80 (Midnight Mustang) while, if you take the first three favourites in each race there has only been one other winner, I Am Invincible, at $4.20.

If Ms Punter had decided to back every A B and C favourite in each race the outlay would have been 12 units out for returns of 7 units. The current picture is even sadder when you consider 10 of the ABC runners have been $5.00 or less. If you had backed every one of the ten to return $100 you would have outlayed $274.53 for a miserable return of $199.94.

Again all that initially glitters (WFA races are "easier") has proven to be the opposite. However, in all fairness, we have just started the season and the statistics I have are based on an extremely low sample figure. Time will tell how much of a recovery will be made, and rest assured it will recover. I will have another look for you after another batch of ten or so WFA races. Over the next few weeks there will be numerous Set Weights type of events for three years and I will report on them as well.
