The Underwood Stakes quinella of It’s A Dundeel and Atlantic Jewel head a list of 14 nominations in Saturday’s $402,000 Group 1 Cathay Pacific Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield. Whether It’s A Dundeel takes his place though may well be decided over the next 48 hours with the five-time Group 1 winner set to gallop on Wednesday with a three-quarter horse shoe after battling to overcome a hoof abscess.

The Murray Baker-trained four-year-old’s chances of lining up in the weight-for-age event did improve this morning when the abscess burst and the horse will head to the beach tomorrow to assist his preparation.

While there is still a lingering doubt over the New Zealand star, there are no such concerns with Aussie heroine Atlantic Jewel.

Despite having her colours lowered for the first time in ten starts in the Underwood, Mark Kavanagh’s daughter of Fastnet Rock remains the current Cox Plate favourite with TAB fixed odds ahead of It’s A Dundeel.

Other key nominations in the race include defending Melbourne Cup champion Green Moon as well as his Macedon Lodge stable mates Sea Moon and Massiyn, Makybe Diva Stakes winner Foreteller, exciting stayer Star Rolling and the interesting entry of the Mark Kavanagh-trained Super Cool.

The second of the three Group 1s on the ten-race program, the $402,000 David Jones NBCF Toorak Handicap (1600m), features 22 nominations headed by last year’s winner Solzhenitsyn.

Third in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield last start, it was the same position the seven-year-old finished in the race last year before going on to win the Toorak.

Should the Robert Heathcote-trained gelding hope to make it back to back victories he could have to defeat a field that includes Stradbroke Handicap winner Linton, in-form gelding Speediness, 2011 Turnbull Stakes victor December Draw as well as dual Group 1 winner Luckygray.

French gelding Trevieres, who was among the first load of internationals at Werribee, is a most interesting nomination in the Toorak with the six-year-old also entered in both the Caulfield Stakes and Herbert Power Stakes.

The Group 2 Sportingbet Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) promises to be a further highlight on the program, offering the final ballot exempt position into the following week’s BMW Caulfield Cup.

After losing the Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington on protest last Saturday, high profile import Sea Moon heads a list of 17 nominations which also includes Macedon Lodge stable mates Tanby, Massiyn and Hartani.

Other key entries include internationals Simenon and Ruscello, imports Bit Of Hell and Kesampour as well as the progressive Nigel Blackiston-trained mare Let’s Make A Deal.

Nominations have been extended until 10am Tuesday for both the Caulfield Stakes as well as the $221,000 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m).

Acceptances close for Saturday’s $1 million BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at 9am Tuesday with the barrier draw to follow at 11am.
