Spring big-race star Shoot Out worked along at Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning but some onlookers felt he was all at sea. The track was opened for course proper gallops. Shoot Out ran even time in relaxed fashion. He got around the tricky Valley circuit OK but not with any great ease, apparently. Trainer John Wallace was puzzled. He says: 'I didn't know much about the joint so I don't know how he went myself...'I told the rider not to kill him. Let him look at it and work home the last bit...This horse has never been on a float to go anywhere to gallop in his life other than a barrier trial or raceday so he wouldn't know what he was doing this morning...He's ready to go. He'll be right once he gets a few horses around him.' On Saturday, Shoot Out has his fourth run this preparation in the Grp 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.

Efficient is out of the Melbourne Cup (as expected). He was not among the 151 horses included in the latest decs. Other key omissions from the Melbourne Cup were Japanese stayers Jaguar Mail and Meiner Kitz, Godolphin's English St Leger winner Mastery and the 2007 Melbourne Cup runner-up Purple Moon.
