The Geelong Classic-Victoria Derby curse will linger for at least one more year after this year's winner, Solemn, was this morning withdrawn from Saturday's $1.5 million Derby at Flemington. The colt's trainer, Peter Snowden, advised Racing Victoria stewards that Solemn developed a temperature overnight and would not proceed to the 2500-metre staying test. The son of Bernardini, who stormed to an impressive win in the 2200m Geelong Classic last Wednesday, was a $6 chance in TAB's Derby market at the time of his withdrawal. Solemn's withdrawal has seen It's A Dundeel shorten at the head of markets, now a $2.40 chance, with Super Cool ($6) and $6.50 pair Honorius and Hvasstan the Kiwi colt's biggest threats.
