Consistent stayer Ironstein will finally get the chance to compete over 3200m this spring when he lines up in the Sandown Cup on Saturday. After missing out on a Melbourne Cup start for the second year in a row, Ironstein went to Saturday's Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) to defend his title in the Grp 3 race. His bid was thwarted in spectacular fashion by former French horse Puissance de Lune, who beat him by five lengths with Ironstein 2.5 lengths in front of third placed Tanby. The winner is now the 2013 Melbourne Cup favorite with Glen Boss anointing him as one of the best he has ridden.

The OTI Syndicate's ex-UK stayer Ibicenco, a strong and luckless 4th in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2500m) on Derby Day, is nominated fo the Zipping Classic and Sandown Cup (3200 m). The syndicate - which hit the headlines by sacking Damien Oliver while others were eagerly booking him for carnival rides - will be hoping Ibicenco gets more luck than he got in the Queen Elizabeth Stks. He was blocked when going strongly in the final 100m.
