The rules of the Medal are clear - it's awarded to the most outstanding flat jockey of the season based on performances at metropolitan meetings from August 1, 2009, to July 31, 2010. Stewards at each meeting award votes on a three-two-one basis for the three rides they consider the most outstanding of the day.

I don't suppose Luke Nolen will complain. He's not that sort of bloke. In fact, he missed last night's Medal function; he was in England riding for the Rest of the World team in the Shergar Cup jockeys' challenge at Ascot. He won praise for his perfect winning ride on favorite Set The Trend ($4.20) in a 1600m race on Saturday. Nolen had the horse in 3rd place to the turn and then sent him to the front to draw clear.

Still at the top at 81...The 'master blaster' Bart Cummings won a record third Fred Hoysted Medal for the most outstanding training performance, thanks to his sterling 2009 spring racing carnival. Bart won four Grp 1 races - the Caulfield Cup (Viewed), Cox Plate (So You Think), VRC Oaks (Faint Perfume) and Toorak Handicap (Allez Wonder).
