Aaron Purcell's French import St Jean will be entered for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups after his back-to-back Saturday win in the $80,000 TVN Handicap (2400m) at Sportingbet Park Sandown.

It was the third win this preparation for the four-year-old and Purcell said will now send him for a spell before bringing  back for the Spring.

“He’s getting better and getting stronger with each run,” Purcell said. “He’s got a good racing pattern where he puts himself in the right spot in a race and he’s always strong to the line so it gives him a good chance of winning.

“He’s never going to win a sit and sprint race but because he can put himself in a race he can take that factor out of his races and it would take a pretty strong horse to out-stay him.

“I’d say he’ll go to the paddock for a short break and then we’ll probably have a go at a few races in the Spring, I’m not sure where he’ll end up but we’ll give him a chance to see what he can do.”

Settling just behind the early leaders, jockey Damien Lane eased St Jean ($2.20F) into the clear at the top of the straight with the son of Teofilo drawing away from his rivals over the final 200m.

In the battle for the minor positions Sacred Flyer ($11) finished off strongly to grab second 2.5 lengths away from the winner, with three-year-old Happy As Hell ($12) a further head away in third.

Still unsure exactly which path he will take in the Spring, Purcell said he will likely give the horse his chance to qualify for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups through the ballot-exempt lead up races.

“His rating probably isn’t high enough to get into the better races so we’ll probably put him in the medium-class races and if he can win one of them he’ll go to the better class of races,” he said.

“We’ll see how he spells and then work out a plan.

“We’ll enter him in the Cups and if it’s not this year we won’t worry too much. We’ll enter him just in case he does find that bit extra that he needs.

“It probably cost me $150,000 all up to get him here so he’s going alright so far.”
