Three-year-old Super Talent is going to become a player for some more significant silverware next season but the Benno Yung Tin-pang-trained gelding looks well placed to snare the Lusitano Challenge Cup (1,400m) at Sha Tin today, reports Racing Post HK.

Yet to miss the first four in his brief career, Super Talent (Douglas Whyte) gives every indication of developing into a Classic Mile horse in early 2016 but for now he is busy piling up the rating points to get him into races like that as a four-year-old.

To date the son of Keeper has climbed from his 52 rating kick-off point to reach 70 and he should find himself doing well in Class Two by the time the current season winds up.

That promise of a black type future alone gives him an edge on much of the field he meets today, with few of his opposition looking to have much scope beyond Class Three.

His Achilles heel at this stage is a lack of real tactical pace, and Super Talent has been unluckily defeated on several occasions this campaign due to that absent skill.

That wasn't the case last start when a good pace saw him perfectly suited but it presents the major issue for him today. In short, the race lacks leaders but the hope for Super Talent backers is that one horse which looks a potential leader, Outlawed, is drawn near the outside for 10-pound claimer Jack Wong Ho-nam and will probably have to be revved up to get across and that could inspire some pace.

Penglai Xianzi was once a bold frontrunner himself but time has made him unreliable at the start as well as robbed him of some natural speed and the eight-year-old seems to race wherever he lands these days.

If this pair came out looking for the front together that would make the race for Super Talent, who could sit in midfield or worse with cover and swamp the tiring leaders. The query is whether he gets that but he is the one to beat in any case.

His main danger on raw form, Presidentparamount (Derek Leung Ka-chun) has even bigger issues and faces the proposition of another tough run like the one he endured behind Packing Pins last time.
