An online bookmaking firm is offering $4 Bart Cummings for the Melbourne Cup.

Sounds good doesn't it? Any of Bart's win and you get paid 3/1.

And right now he is flying so high you'd have to think the Gods would need to intervene if he's to be stopped!

However... that bet. Let's think about it.

I can get Viewed at $8.

I can get Roman Emperor at $14.

And Allez Wonder is around the traps at $34.

Better for all three if you shop from site to site.

OK, so we have $100 on Bart to win. True, he may yet squeak in with one, or even two, others. In my humble opinion they couldn't win the big one if they started on Monday night, but then there's the Bart factor. I'll risk them and their chances of even getting in. So we stand to win $300 and collect the $100 stake back if anything of Bart's wins.

But if we stagger the bets on the three that ARE in the race, we can have $55 at $8 on Viewed ($440).

And $32 on Roman Emperor ($448).

And $13 on Allez Wonder ($442).

True, I miss the no-hopers, but if they make it I might have to swallow my pride and have a few dollars to cover the total outlay of $100. That might cost me an extra $10.

But with a little preplanning I can make an extra $40 or more (that's 40% on my outlay!).

Food for thought isn't it?

(hoofnote- thanks to a quick correspondent who points out that $50 on Viewed, $29 on Roman Emperor and $12 on Allez Wonder costs $91, and achieves an equal or better return than the $4 bet on offer; and there's a possible spare $9 IF anything else makes the field. If no others make the field, the three above are on at 300/91, and not 300/100. - Good one!)
