Veteran jockey Darren Gauci was taken to Bendigo Hospital for x-rays after a fall from Royal Mephisto in the Showcase 0-64 Handicap today at Bendigo. Paramedics had concerns over Gauci's swollen right wrist.

Gauci also sustained a cut to his face where the hook of his riding boot struck him. The popular rider was conscious and alert and talking to paramedics and Damien Oliver after the fall about 50 metres from the finish post.

Racing Victoria steward Peter Ryan, who was in charge of the meeting, said an inquiry has been opened and adjourned. Ryan said Gauci's gear had been examined and it was intact.

Gauci held on to the reins and twisted underneath the horse, which, fortuitously didn't land on top of him. Royal Mephisto didn't appear to be injured.
