Cox Plate contender Descarado faces a race against the clock to be fit for Saturday's $3 million Tatts Cox Plate, with the Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding forced out of trackwork this morning with swelling in the near hind leg, reports The Age.
It says: Chief Steward Terry Bailey said Descarado would be inspected by Racing Victoria vets on Friday, with the 2010 Caulfield Cup winner a far from certain starter in Australasia's weight-for-age championship.
Stuart Webb, the trainer of triple Group 1-winning mare Yosei, also added to the intrigue surrounding the make-up of the Cox Plate field when he confirmed this morning that he was unlikely to pay up to run on Saturday.
Prior to this morning, five horses - including 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient - were vieing for the final two places in the 14-horse Cox Plate field. The absence of Yosei and potentially Descarado would just about assure Lloyd Williams' veteran, who hasn't won a race since the 2009 Turnbull Stakes, would make the field. (www.theage.com.au)
