ONE of the country's most improved horses, Driffield Gold, has received a setback in his Caulfield Cup campaign, with a foot abscess forcing him out of today's D'Urban Stakes at Caulfield, reports The Age.

It says: Trainer Robert Smerdon said yesterday although the ailment could sometimes linger, he was hopeful the horse could return to work in the next few days and continue on his path towards a possible Caulfield Cup start.

''It hasn't burst out yet but he's down at the beach and hopefully it will resolve itself quickly,'' Smerdon said. ''He's pretty fit and he's pretty forward, so as long as it (abscess) comes out soon we don't envisage it will set him back too much.''
