PREMIER Sydney trainer Chris Waller will train all yearlings purchased this year by leading syndicator Star Thoroughbreds. Denise Martin, owner of Star Thoroughbreds, made the shock announcement today of the switch from Gai Waterhouse to Waller in a press statement.

Waterhouse has exclusively trained for Star Thoroughbreds since Martin established the company in 1994.

Star Thoroughbred’s champion colt Sebring, winner of the 2008 Golden Slipper and AJC Sires Produce, five-time Group 1 winner Theseo, Group 1 winner Danglissa and Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Driefontein were among the scores of winners trained by Waterhouse.

The Waterhouse-trained Echo Gal will carry the signature Star Thoroughbred purple and white stars colors in Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast.

Martin described the decision as “purely business based” and noted she has an “excellent personal relationship with Gai and her team”

She noted she looked forward to “continued success with the large number of horses Gai currently trains for our Star owners.”

“The many horses which Gai currently trains for Star Thoroughbreds will continue to receive the expert care and attention, characteristic of the Hall of Fame trainer,” the press statement said.

Martin described Waterhouse as "one of the world's greatest ever racehorse trainers and her record breaking achievements are legendary.

“She is greatly admired for her impact on Australian racing and her success at the highest level of racing is remarkable. I have.

“My decision is purely business based and I'm looking forward to the next challenge in the life of Star Thoroughbreds.”
