NICELY bred colt Monteux suggested better wins to come after an impressive debut win in a maiden at Bendigo on Wednesday, prompting jockey Chad Schofield to predict a bright future for the 3YO.

Mounteux, a son of Medaglia d'Oro from VRC Oaks placegetter Kylikwong, finished powerfully to beat Royal Ocean and Fait And Fury.

Schofield said Monteux, a $375,000 yearling, showed such upside that he would be keen to stick with the colt wherever Peter Moody took him next.

“He jumped really well and put herself in a lovely position,” Schofield said.

“He was pretty green in amongst them and dropped the bridle, which allowed him to get pocketed.

“For a while he didn’t feel like he was going anywhere, but as soon as I got him into the clear and put one around his tail he really surged to the line.

“He gave me a good feel.”

Monteux, $4.60, swamped Royal Ocean, backed from $4.40 to $3.70 favourite, to win by half a length with Faith And Fury, $5, three-quarters of a length away third.
