Multiple Group 1-winning mare Yosei amazingly will get into Saturday’s Group 1 $400,000 Goodwood Handicap with the minimum weight. Trainer Stuart Webb this morning explained to Racing Network how the unique set-weights with penalties conditions suit his mare perfectly.

“You get 3kg penalty for a Group 1 win, but her Group 1’s fall outside the prescribed dates, so she gets in on the minimum, which is fantastic for a small mare like her,” Webb told Racing Network news.

Yosei resumed in the Group 1 Sportingbet Classic (Sangster Stakes) when she charged home from the back of the field for third (behind Platelet).

“Bar for being held up she would have run second and I think it’s one of the very few times she has run a place in a race when carrying more than 56kgs,” Webb noted.

Webb said regular rider Michelle Payne had assured him she would be able to make the weight of 52.5kgs.

“Michelle says she’ll make it so all I can do is trust her.

"If this race was 1400-metres you would be declaring her, but at 1200-metres she is always a risk.

"But, I’ve kept the speed in her legs knowing she has to go to Brisbane after this and run in two, possibly three 1400-metre races (Doomben 10,000, Stradbroke Handicap, Tiara).”

Yosei is currently rated an $11 dollar chance in the Goodwood behind Peter Moody’s Moment Of Change at $2.50.
