Peter Moody doesn't have Black Caviar to call on this Spring Racing Carnival, but Victoria's leading trainer still holds a commanding hand in the Group 1 sprints.

Moody has eight of the 57 entries for the $1 million Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) and six of the 45 nominations for the $750,000 Sportingbet Manikato Stakes (1200m), which both closed today.

Curtana, King's Rose, Kulgrinda, Mid Summer Music, Moment Of Change and Ready To Rip have been entered for both races, while Golden Archer and Clinton Affair are also nominated for the Patinack Farm Classic.

Black Caviar has won the Classic, which is the ninth leg of the 2012 Global Sprint Challenge, the past two seasons and there is no shortage of sprinters keen to cash in on her absence.

Buffering finished second to the champion mare last year and is back to try and go one better, while classy New South Wales sprinters Sea Siren and Atomic Force, former international globetrotter Green Birdie and last year's Goodwood winner Lone Rock are the Group 1 winners entered.

Those horses are also entered for the Manikato Stakes, while Bel Sprinter, Rain Affair and Mental are among those yet to score at the highest level who hold a nomination for both events.

The Manikato Stakes, previously run on AFL Grand Final eve in September and won last year by three-year-old Sepoy, takes up a new position on the opening night of the Sportingbet Cox Plate Carnival, Friday night, 26 October.

The Patinack Farm Classic will again be run on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, this year being Saturday 10 November.

First acceptances for the Sportingbet Manikato Stakes close at noon on Tuesday, 9 October with the Patinack Farm Classic first acceptances closing at noon on Tuesday, 23 October.
