MELBOURNE Cup-winning jockey Michael Kinane yesterday cast doubt over the credentials of So You Think and Irish mare Profound Beauty, claiming both were suspect over 3200 metres, reports The Age.

It says: Kinane, the man who changed the Melbourne Cup forever with his international victory on the Dermot Weld-trained Vintage Crop in 1993, said that while he had no doubts about the quality of both horses, he felt the marathon distance of the Melbourne Cup would bring about their undoing.

He said dual Cox Plate winner So You Think must change his on-pace style to be able to run the distance. ''He is undoubtedly a horse with a lot of pace, a lot of early pace. He finds going quick very easy,'' Kinane said at yesterday's Breakfast with the Stars at Flemington.

''He started his run very early [in Saturday's Cox Plate] and put the race to bed very quickly, which is always the hallmark of a good horse. But I doubt his ability to go [3200 metres]. He did start to struggle that last 50 metres. He was at the top of his run. He can go all right but he's got to change his style to last the 3200.''

Among the greats, such as Sea The Stars who he rode before retiring last year, Kinane also partnered So You Think's sire High Chaparral to his six group 1 victories and so has an intimate knowledge of So You Think's make-up.
