TRAINER Chris Waller believes King Gladiator has earned his place in the AJC Australian Derby but admits to being worried the race might come a bit too soon for the son of Galileo, reports The Age.

It says: King Gladiator was backed to win $500,000 with Sportingbet, and is now a $13 chance behind the favourite, Rosehill Guineas winner Jimmy Choux, after his fifth in the Tulloch Stakes last Saturday.

''I don't think he should be that short,'' Waller said. ''He is a nice horse that has gone through the right preparation for the Derby and got there. I said if he ran in the first three on Saturday I would run him. He couldn't do that, but the run was so good we have to run him.''

King Gladiator has won only one of his five starts, a Hawkesbury maiden, and his inexperience might count against him on Saturday.

''It might be a bit quick for him but you don't get an opportunity to run in Derbies every day, especially with horses that will be suited by the trip,'' Waller said.
