John Thompson believes First Seal is the best horse he has ever trained after the three-year-old filly caused an upset in the Tea Rose Stakes at Royal Randwick.

First Seal claimed the scalps of Winx and Earthquake in the Group 2 contest and stamped herself as the filly to beat in the Group 1 Flight Stakes in a fortnight.

"She is the best horse I've ever trained, I'm telling you, she is a freak," Thompson said.

"That is a very big win and one that comes at a perfect time. She is only going to get better as the races get longer."

Thompson has endured a turbulent time in the past 12 months due to his association with Patinack Farm, who had their last runner with Hooked at Newcastle during the week.

Thompson has a small team of horses in work at Randwick and is looking to rebuild following the departure of Nathan Tinkler.

First Seal, who ran second to Sweynesse last start, settled in behind the speed and showed a good turn of foot on the inside to defeat Winx with Earthquake running third.

“Back on a dry track she just hadn’t shown that turn of foot she showed at home and did get a good run from barrier one but she beat the best fillies in the country today and she is untapped, a very high class filly," Thompson said.

“Once she get’s over those classic distances she will really come to the fore. I told the owners yesterday she probably won’t win over the 1400m but class goes a long way and I struggle to think of a better horse I have had.”

“I was very surprised she didn’t win last start and I thought she would get further back in the run today and she will probably go to the Flight Stakes now.

“I am at that change in life the stable has lost a lot of horses and we got new clients like this it’s been an up and down week that’s for sure.” (Racing Network)
