David Hayes's impressive import Motivado will run in the Listed $100,000 McKell Cup (2400m

David Hayes's impressive import Motivado will run in the Listed $100,000 McKell Cup (2400m) at Randwick on Saturday week, reports Racing Network.

Hayes explained to Racing Network this afternoon he was going that way to try and increase his rating for the feature Spring races.

“They have changed the conditions of the Melbourne Cup.

"He’s qualified for the race but he needs to win over 2400 metres and in at least Listed company to improve his rating, handicapper Greg Carpenter has told me,” Hayes said.

Motivado is coming off a solid win at Morphettville in the Queen’s Cup over 2500 metres, and Hayes said his real go in life was staying over longer trips.

“The two miles of the Melbourne Cup is his go that’s why we’re trying to get his rating up so he can get into the race,” he explained.

“I’m treating this like being in the UK and running a horse over 2400 metres, then having him not appear again for six or seven weeks,” Hayes said.

Getting a start in the Melbourne Cup is the sole aim Hayes has at this stage.

Motivado is now a Group 3 winner, courtesy of his Queen’s Cup victory in Adelaide, and Hayes is now looking to improve his rating before he has a short break from racing and returns for the Spring staying features.
