HUGH BOWMAN is set to lose the Doomben Cup ride on Metal Bender but Sydney's premier jockey will steer Britain-bound sprinter Ortensia in Saturday's BTC Cup at Doomben, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: The Tony Noonan-trained Ortensia is out to make it back-to-back group 1 victories having unleashed a stunning burst from last to claim The Galaxy at Randwick last month.

With regular jockey Craig Williams riding in Japan for the next two months, Bowman has been booked to ride Ortensia also in the Doomben 10,000.

Bowman was suspended on Saturday for eight meetings for causing interference on Lochiel in the Gold Coast Guineas, one race before winning the Hollindale Stakes on Metal Bender. The suspension is due to begin this Sunday.

''I will appeal,'' Bowman said. ''The carelessness was minute and the interference next to nothing. I'm staying in Queensland and I will be riding Ortensia in trackwork for the first time on Tuesday. I'm thrilled to get an opportunity to ride her. She is top class.''

Metal Bender will start in the Doomben Cup on Saturday week. The gelding's trainer, Chris Waller, will run Shellscrape, pipped by Ortensia in The Galaxy, in the BTC Cup.

Colleague Gerald Ryan will start Melito in the BTC Cup. The filly scored her maiden group 1 win in the TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick and followed that with a second behind Hot Danish in the All Aged Stakes.
