Glen Boss moved 10 wins clear of Luke Nolen at the top of the metropolitan jockeys' premiership table after partnering lightly-raced five-year-old British General to victory in today's Dorevitch Pathology Handicap (1410m) at Flemington.
The win was Boss' 31st of the 2012/13 season with nearest rival Luke Nolen cutting the margin back to nine after taking out the final race on the program.
Sent out at $10 in the betting, Boss positioned the son of General Nediym in second position behind the leader The New Boy ($6.50) who travelled strongly in the lead wearing blinkers for the first time.
As the field entered the long run home it became quickly clear that it was a race between the two frontrunners with British General only wearing down The New Boy inside the final 50m to win by a neck on the line.
After failing only a week earlier as the $4 favourite at Caulfield, trainer Dan O'Sullivan said he couldn't explain what had happened but it was nice to see the horse produce what he thought he was capable of.
"It was a bizarre race (last week), the wind turned around before the race but all day it just didn't suit on pace horses," O'Sullivan said.
"Luke Currie was adamant that he wasn't happy being inside the other horses and it worked out well today when we got the run outside the leader.
"It was just nice to see him show us what he shows at home and what we know he can do."
White Universe ($20) maintained his position in running to finish third two lengths from the winner in a race completely dominated by those on the speed.
