A career in Hong Kong awaits the regally-bred Wonder Kid after a strong debut victory at Mornington on Monday.

A $300,000 purchase, the gelding has superb bloodlines, being by Lonhro out of Valkyrie Diva, the half-sister of three-time Melbourne Cup-hero Makybe Diva.

Dean Hawkes, representing the international owner, confirmed the three-year-old will “be booked on the first available flight to go to Hong Kong now”.

Wonder Kid went forward from the start under the guidance of Mark Zahra, settling outside the leader before finding the front on the turn and holding off a late challenge to book his ticket overseas.

“He’s a lovely-bred horse and he’s going to get better with a bit of time,” trainer Pat Carey said.

“He won his trial nice, albeit a half-mile trial, coming here raceday it’s another thing to get the job done.”

Wonder Kid, who started a $2.90 favourite, beat the Darren Weir-prepared Strong Hand ($3) by a head with Unruly Student ($8) two and a quarter lengths back in third.
