MICK Kent plans to take Solsay, winner of Friday night's 1Print.com.au Handicap (1200 m) at Moonee Valley, to Tasmania for next month’s Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes in Hobart on February 9.
Kent said it was apparent from watching Solsay take seemingly forever to reel in Tackleberry that the six-year-old is looking for 1400 m.
He said there had been a consideration of running Solsay in the Group 2 Australia Stakes, but it made little sense given the gelding’s rating.
“He’s an on-speed horse and he’s tough and I reckon he’ll be suited to that race (Thomas Lyons Stakes) in Tassie,” Kent said.
“The tougher it is the better he likes it.”
For a fleeting moment it appeared when Tackleberry gave a kick turning for home that Solsay may have his work cut out, but he rallied to the riding of apprentice Jackie Beriman.
Solsay is an entry in the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200 m) at Flemington on March 8, but Kent said he would assess that after the trip to Tasmania. (racingnetwork)
