Sunday at Lismore marks an important stepping stone for Morgan Butler’s promising filly Capricious Spirit, reports Racing NSW.

The daughter of I Am Invincible, a brilliant winner at her only start, is being aimed at the $100,000 Inglis 2YO Challenge (1100m) at Scone on May 15.

Grafton based Butler, a former jockey, has a good opinion of Capricious Spirit.

“Just like her mother (Capricious Lady) she’s a very fast filly,” Butler said. “She won very well on debut and has come back this time going really well.

“My aim is to have her peak for the Scone two-year-old race.”

During his days as a jockey Butler won on Capricious Lady for Warwick Farm trainer Gary Portelli. The association led to Butler paying $44,000 for Capricious Spirit at an Inglis yearling sale.

Capricious Spirit made her debut over 1015m at Grafton on March 7, the speedy filly leading throughout to record an impressive 3.5 length win.

Butler then eased the filly who hasn’t raced for 50 days.

“She had a week and a bit in the paddock just to freshen her up,” Butler said. “Since she’s been back in work she’s had a jump out which she won easily. She’s a very quick filly and Sunday should be interesting.

“She’s not 100 per cent fit but she’s not far off it either. She’s first up from a break and going to 1200 metres for the first time.

“She’s not up there for a holiday but this run is for education and fitness. I still think she’s good enough to win but my main aim is to have her peak for the Scone race.

“The race at Lismore gives me the chance to take her away from home , more race education which will do her the world of good mentally and physically., ”

Demeanour wise, Capricious Spirit, who goes by the stable nickname of ‘Lizzy’ taken from the main character in the show The Black List, is a mixed bag.

“She’s so placid butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth,” Butler said. “But at the same time you’ve got to be careful around her or she will try and kick and bite you if you’re not aware.”

Capricious Spirit has drawn ideally in barrier four.
