Following Big Memory’s eye-catching 10th in Saturday’s $3 million Caulfield Cup, he’s now heading to the Melbourne Cup. Trainer Tony McEvoy said on Monday morning the French-bred stayer would be on a “wait and see” path leading into the Cup.
“He’s currently 36th on the order of entry so we’re going to have to just wait and see what happens,” McEvoy said. “If it looks like he’s not going to make the field I’ll run him in the Lexus (Stakes, 2500m) on Derby Day, but, if it looks like he’ll make the field, then I’ll run him in the Mackinnon (Stakes, 2000m),” he explained.
Big Memory came from last at one stage of the Caulfield Cup to finish a closing 10th, and McEvoy was thrilled with the run.
“He ran super. We were thrilled, and he showed us he’s a horse of the future. We have to go to the Melbourne Cup now,” McEvoy said.
The import went into the Caulfield Cup on the back of a tough win in the Group 2 Herbert Power Handicap (2400m) at Caulfield the week before.
