“He’s a colt that oozed quality in the autumn but he was very immature, he had a great physique but he just hadn’t grown into his body yet,” Boss said.
“Today was the day if he was ever going to get beat. He lost it on the corner and didn’t track very well around the bend.
“Just wait until he gets out to a mile (1600m) and beyond, he’s got a great constitution and demeanour about him.”
Describing his past three or four months as ‘really ordinary’, Boss paid tribute to Chivalry’s trainer Mark Kavanagh.
“There’s been a lot of my good friends and trainers that have dropped right off so I’d just like to thank Kav (Mark Kavanagh) and his team,” he said.
Settling at the rear of the field, Boss angled Chivalry ($7.50) to the centre of the track on the turn before making his run down the outside of the field to record a head victory over Nordic Empire ($10), with Awesome Rock ($9) a further half-neck away in third.
Kavanagh said the son of Street Cry would now head to the Henry Bucks Best Dressed Stakes (1400m) at Flemington in a fortnight.
“We’ll be heading towards that race (Caulfield Guineas),” Kavanagh said.
“His style of racing looks suited to longer distances.”
